The Kobuk Mountain Parka is a box-baffle down insulated jacket for 3 season use. We build these one at a time, giving you the ability to fully customize and tailor fit the jacket based on the configuration options at the bottom of this page.
The box-baffle design creates a one inch deep continuous space between the outer shell and the liner, without cold bridges or other breaks in the insulation. Our high quality 900 fill power goose down occupies this space, controlled by evenly spaced inner walls of mesh.
A two-way separating #5 YKK front zipper is backed by a down filled draft tube with an anti-snag sailcloth zipper guard for smooth operation. The two-way operation is handy when the parka is worn while wearing a climbing harness.
The insulated zippered exterior pockets are positioned for effective hand warming while simultaneously providing ample room for storage.
Interior zippered pockets can be selected at chest and belly level. The chest pockets will fit snacks and electronics, while the belly pockets can hold water bottles in an environment that could prevent them from freezing. To take full advantage of this feature it is best combined with the roomier fit of the Expedition Level upgrade, mentioned later.
The optional hood is snap attached, and available in a generous standard size or an oversized helmet compatible version.
Cuff closures are selectable in either fixed circumference elastic or adjustable Velcro. While elastic is by far the most popular, there's time when the complete seal achieved with Velcro is essential.
The standard Kobuk is sized to accommodate the effective modern base layering systems, used during summer and shoulder season conditions in the mountains. For winter and high altitude use consider the...
Expedition Level Upgrade
This is almost a completely different parka.
The box-baffle height is increased, as is the down volume, to reach a level of insulation needed for true 4 season use.
In addition to this, the sizing and fit is much roomier. For example, the size medium is based roughly on the size large parka, and so on. Such extra interior room is needed when the parka is worn on top of the many bulky layers typically associated with thin air.
Almost the entire suite of Nunatak shell materials are available for the Kobuk, from ultralight to tougher and more abrasion resistant choices. Please see the fabric page for a quick overview of the various features of all these choices.
Down Type and Quantity
We recommend selecting Hyper-Dry moisture resistant down for garments, at the expense of a little more weight and bulk.
An option in the configuration menu below is Down Overfill. Adding one or several ounces to the standard fill will increase the parka's warmth, however, this will not meet the level of high mountain capacity the Expedition Level Upgrade offers.
