The Nebula is a hybrid backcountry quilt comprised of two distinctly different insulation types permanently combined into one sleep system. The outer layer is APEX, a synthetic continuous filament know to be both durable and long lasting. Inside is high loft goose down in an advanced box baffled arrangement.

With the bulk of the insulating warmth coming from tested and true goose down the Nebula is lighter and packs much smaller than a 100% synthetic quilt of comparable temperature rating. Yet it retains many of the positive aspects of pitting synthetic fill against a harsh mountain environment.

A down quilt is often damp, or even wet, in the morning. It can be heavy dew while sleeping under the stars; mist and spray from nightly rain making it under the tarp; condensation forming on tent walls or in bivy bags. The Nebula's less absorbent, quick drying outer synthetic insulation takes these hits in stride and recover quickly.

During sleep most backpackers release body moisture. When this meets the colder air near a quilt's outer surface it can condense and cause a dramatic loss of down loft. With a hybrid quilt like the Nebula such an event will likely take place in the synthetic layer, to little or no harm.

The stable, continuous coverage APEX provides warmth in places where the down volume might get compressed or shift gradually during the night.

Without a need for a weatherproof outer fabric skin the quilt remains very breathable and quick drying. That said, for absolute extreme conditions we do offer the Nebula with various options for waterproof/breathable shells.

Adding up all the above qualities, the APEX layer may offer even more durable warmth than an isolated gram to gram comparison with down would allude to.

To make the Nebula we retain the features of our Arc UL down quilt, including full box-baffled construction, extensive down control measures, body mapped fill quantities and the cosy neck baffle. Then we add a continuous, non-quilted layer of APEX synthetic insulation to the entire outer surface, but isolated from the down component by a barrier of ultralight fabric.

Quilt Straps and Cords

Stuffed size for a size Long Nebula is an acceptable 14" x 6" (length x diameter)

Warm and dry

I was out last week wild camping in the Yorkshire Dales. I pitched my tarp in dry windy conditions then changed into my Nunatak Skaha pullover and pants unfurled my Nunatak Nebula quilt and sat nice and warm in the dark star gazing.
The temperature dropped I cooked a meal then snuggled down in my quilt for the night. Cold, cold the North wind did blow till 3am when it turned around to the South and added a bit of rain for my discomfort. No worries by simply moving two peg I had a door to keep the weather out and I was able to get back into my Nunatak Nebula quilt. Some rain had got onto my quilt but no problem as the top layer is an Apex filling. Temperature dropped to 26f over night, but I was warm as toast in the quilt.

Quilt for all seasons

This is Nunatak’s first foray into hybrid quilts and possibly the first ever hybrid twin layered quilt on the market. Oozing with modern styling and technology, this light weight tapered quilt refuses to conform to the orthodoxy. I have used it for a few nights in the Yorkshire dales and have it to be toasty warm down to 30f and it has a comfort rating of 25f. It is available in a few colours and sizes and I chose a small for my 5’56” medium size frame and found it quite generous in size and only weighing 680g

Down Type

We use 900 fill power goose down, certified responsibly sourced.

Hyper-Dry moisture resistant down will help combat the effects of perspiration, misting tents and damp air. Nunatak products made with Hyper-Dry down will have a slight increase in bulk over those made with untreated down.

Edge Tension Control

This design involves two user adjustable shock cords running lengthwise along the left and right quilt edges. On cold nights tension the cords to shorten the edges and draw them under you; during milder conditions completely slacken the cords to have the blanket throw feel. Go here for more info
