The highest performing fully featured zipper-less quilt we have made yet: The Strugi-Q
Comfort rated based on real life feedback and over 25 years of down making experience
Underside opening with parallel sides making draft control more or less built in. This is possible by sewing the quilt body into a mummy shape instead of attempting to wrap a two dimensional blanket type around the user
Two overall shape options: No inward taper until hip level or adapted mummy contours. See diagram on menu below
Horizontal baffles. With our ‘dense pack’* approach the down stays put for longer and a continuous baffle run allow underside down to be moved up and around. *eschewing theoretical values and calculated percentages we instead use feel and real life experience. The fill amount for a given chamber is high to point where the down doesn't 'fully' loft - this buffer is what you want out there for sure
As always a permanently closed foot box with a round end piece for superior warmth; no zipper, drawcords or socks stuffed in leaky holes. 40" is good up to size 12 for mostly side sleepers. Back sleepers need to size up to 44 around size 11 feet
Width is the most important spec to get right. The Strugi-Q makes this easier with six real life options: 50" - 53” - 56” - 59” - 62” and the big guy: 68”. Most will be happy with the 56" width. Skinny folks, expert users and weigh weenies can go narrower. The restless, the big, and the dog co-sleepers can size up
The 70" length is fine up to 5'11". Snugglers and ear warmers can go up a level if in doubt
Also with differential cut, ETC, neck draft collar, straps and 10d materials
Perfect inside a synthetic over-bag, aka the Alfabatik, for gnar conditions
Sastrugi zipper-less bag vs Strugi Quilt:
Comparing the two shows that weight savings are minimal. A person needing the 59" wide Sastrugi bag would choose the 56" or 53" Strugi Quilt, but the added hardware of the quilt (ETC, straps, snaps and buckles) almost make up for the difference.
In environments with consistent night time temperatures, say western mountains at altitude with nearly guaranteed cool nights, the Sastrugi makes sense: draft free, easy to use, simple, affordable.
On the other hand anyone gearing up for a streak of major thru hikes should consider a quilt. Thousands of miles and hundreds of days along changing seasons and environments require the adaptability of a modern well designed quilt.
Underside view with the typical quilt opening bisecting the middle. The Edge Tension Control (ETC) combined with parallel sides and optional side to side straps keeps the opening narrow and mostly draft free when conditions call for the best thermal efficiency
